Episode #14: Trimtabs

A large ship goes by, then comes the rudder. On the edge of the rudder is a miniature rudder called a trimtab. Moving the trimtab builds a low pressure which turns the much bigger rudder that sheers the large ship with almost no effort.
Inventor and futurist Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) pointed out that any individual or organization can act as a trimtab by recognizing the potential downstream influence of small, high-leverage actions pointing in the right new direction. The trimtab’s tiny movements have leverage. They provide the right shift in the right place at the right time.
Increasingly, smaller companies are being acquired and used by their much larger parent companies to begin steering their organizations in a new direction. The executives within these smaller companies need to recognize the incredible power and influence they have to lead their organizations in a better direction. They must understand and appreciate their role as a trimtab.
The smaller company’s actions will pull on the rudder and ultimately change the course of the much larger ocean liner. The development of their authenticity and emotional intelligence will enable it to become the trimtab the larger company needs to embrace rapid innovation and change. It is time we began using the principle of the trimtab to encourage organizational change.
