MBL Minute: Q and A Mindful Versus Minds Full
Episode Notes
Earth is about 4 ½ billion years old. Life has been on the planet for about 3.8 billion years. Homo sapiens have been here for about 200 thousand of those years. Another way to understand this a bit better is that if we say that Earth of about 1 day old, humans are about 3.76 seconds old.
In this relatively brief time we have had a dramatic impact on every aspect of life on this planet. We are having a big impact and we are doing it incredibly quickly. Most of us would be surprised to realize how little time we spend being mindfully present in our thoughts. Our mind spends most of its time focused on past or potentially future events.
When we practice being mindfully present we have a greater awareness of what is going on in and around us. When our minds are full, focused on past or future events, the opposite is true. When we try to change others instead of our self, the results are often drama, chaos, and conflict.
Becoming more mindful will enable us to make better choices. By the end of this century we will be approaching 11 billion consumers of the Earth’s increasingly scarce resources. In relative terms we have only been on the planet for a few seconds. The choices we make in the next few seconds are going to have a ripple effect for generations to come.
