Episode #17: Choose Yourself
You are in a category of one. The decision to choose yourself is fundamental to your success.
Michelangelo was once asked how he sculpted his masterpieces. He replied that he simply saw the works of art embedded within the slabs of marble and then set about chipping away at everything that was not that work of art. Living on purpose requires that you reconnect with the best that already resides within you. The authentic you.
The mistaken view of we have of power as external has reinforced our belief that we need to be chosen and accepted by others in order to be successful. We do not need anyone else’s permission or validation to succeed. The process of choosing our self requires us to reconnect with our authentic self while developing our emotional intelligence.
There are many micro skills and habit stacking lessons to assist us in this process. All of our habits are interconnected. The more habits and micro skills we create that enables us to lower our walls the better our results. Our authenticity and emotional intelligence is developed as we learn to become less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome. This requires our ongoing dedicated practice and emotional labor.
If we want better results we need to develop better habits and micro skills. At first, this may sound relatively simple. The difficulty of this task should not be underestimated. There is significant biological (internal) and sociological (external) resistance to the creation of new skills and habits.
The new habit creation process will trigger an internal battle between our old and new habits. Our existing habits will struggle to maintain their dominance. The old habits are stronger and will initially require less of our energy than the new habits. Dedicated practice of the new skills and habits strengthens them and will gradually reduce the amount of energy they require. The results we ultimately obtain are a merely a reflection of the habits and micro skills we have chosen to develop.
Automaticity is our brain’s process of gradually enslaving us to the actions we repeat. This is how we create new habits. We rely on these habits about 95% of our actions and results every day. I am sure that we can think of many examples of having done something we do repeatedly without thinking about it, like driving to work or tying our shoes. If we want a better results we need to develop the micro skills and habits that reveal our authenticity while developing our emotional intelligence.
