MBL Minute: The Secret Sauce And The Marshmallow Experiment
Episode Notes
The word grit has often been used to refer to
the secret sauce behind most high level achievement. There
has been no clear consensus about why only some people appear to
have this ability. In my experience, it is the practice of
doing emotional labor that develops an individual’s
grittiness. It comes from a
strong emotional connection to the Vision of a desired
result. It is your emotions,
not our thoughts that is the primary driver of our
behaviour.
There are two fundamental choices we make that underlie all business and personal decisions. The first involves the avoidance of potential pain and the second is the more challenging choice of delaying gratification in order to achieve an even greater purpose and result. The marshmallow principle applies in almost every area of business and personal life. Namely, the willingness and self-control to resist the urge for immediate gratification in order to obtain even greater future results.
